Hydrocortisone (Hydrocortisone) is a corticosteroid medication which is sometimes prescribed to compensate for lower levels of this hormone if the body does not produce sufficient quantities of it. It can also reduce swelling. Doctors often prescribe it for a wide range of conditions, including arthritis, disorders of the immune system or blood, certain types of cancer and various other medical conditions.
Dosage and Administration
Hydrocortisone (Hydrocortisone) tablets are to be administered orally, in exact accordance with the dosage instructions given to you by your doctor at the time of prescription. Dosages can vary based on the exact conditions for which the patient seeks treatment, and adrenocortical insufficiency may require a different dosage than asthma or any other conditions. Sudden cessation of treatment is generally avoided, as this can result in peeling of the skin, weight loss, muscular pain and other withdrawal symptoms. Gradual reduction of the dosage is necessary if treatment is being stopped.
Side effects of Hydrocortisone (Hydrocortisone) can include:
- Difficulty sleeping
- Perspiring more than usual
- An increase in the growth of hair
Report any side effects to your doctor. You must see your doctor straight away if you notice sudden weight gain, problems related to vision, seizures or any other signs of a serious reaction.
You will be provided with a special ID card which will contain information related to the fact that you are taking corticosteroid medication, so that if emergency medical treatment is required, any doctor that treats you will be aware that you are being treated with corticosteroid medication.
Taking corticosteroids can make patients more likely to suffer from infections.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Hydrocortisone (Hydrocortisone) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

- If you suffer from any allergies.
- If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.
- If you are using any other medicine (including all non-prescription).
