Tenvir-EM (Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate/Emtricitabine) is a combination of two ingredients, both of which are antiretroviral drugs. It is used to treat HIV-1 infections in adult patients. Treatment with this drug (when used in combination with other medicines) can help to lower the viral load (the amount of HIV in the blood), while also increasing the amount of a certain type of blood cell known as CD4+ (T) cells. These cells help the body to fight and resist infections, which in turn may help to improve the action of the immune system, thereby lowering the risk of opportunistic infections.
Recently, this drug has been approved for pre-exposure prophylaxis (HIV prevention), so as to lower the risk of infection in those considered to be at risk of contracting HIV-1, either through sex with a partner that is known to be infected, or from other causes. However, it is not a substitute for safe sex, and condom use is also considered essential for it to be effective at preventing infection.
Dosage and Administration
Patients taking Tenvir-EM (Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate/Emtricitabine) must visit their doctor for a medical assessment before starting treatment. The dosage requirements for those taking it to treat a HIV infection are different to those taking it for HIV prophylaxis. If you are treating HIV, your doctor will prescribe other drugs for use in combination with this one. Adult patients who weigh at least 35kg are often told to take one tablet per day. The dosage for other drugs will be determined by the prescribing doctor.
If this drug is taken to prevent HIV, patients should note that it is only part of a comprehensive plan to lower the risk of infection. This includes condom use, safer sex practices (such as limiting the number of sexual partners) and regular HIV and STD tests. When given to HIV negative patients (for prophylaxis), it is usually taken once per day. It is very important that it is taken every day, and that no doses are missed.
Possible side effects of Tenvir-EM (Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate/Emtricitabine) include:
- Itchy skin
- Mood changes
- Stomach pain
- A decrease in weight
- Changes in body fat shape
Side effects should be reported to your doctor. Serious reactions may occur in some cases. Immediate medical attention is required if you notice signs of infection, inability to control the bladder or bowel movements, pain affecting the joints, fever, speech difficulties or any other symptoms of a severe reaction.
In some cases, a rare and potentially fatal condition called lactic acidosis may occur in patients treated with this drug. Also, patients with a hepatitis B infection treated with this drug may need to have medical tests conducted regularly if treatment with this drug is stopped.
When used for HIV prevention, this drug is taken on its own. Regular HIV tests will be required. If an infection occurs, the treatment plan may need to be changed, and other drugs may be prescribed by your doctor.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Tenvir-EM (Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate/Emtricitabine) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
